The lowdown on RSS feeds and Podcasts

I’m sure you have heard a lot about RSS Feeds and Podcasting lately. So what is an RSS Feed? RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS delivers information as an XML file called an “RSS feed”, “Webfeed”, “RSS Stream”, “RSS channel” or “Atom”.

RSS is a simple web based format that allows users to subscribe to their favorite websites. Using RSS, webmasters can put their content into a standard format, which can be viewed and organized through RSS reader software or automatically displayed as new content on another website. Podcasts can also be distributed through RSS. A Podcast is a multimedia file distributed over the Internet for playback on mobile devices and personal computers.

A program known as a feed reader or aggregator can check a list of feeds on behalf of a user and display any updated articles that it finds. Google has a feed reader as well as many others.
